Rotarians Ophthalmic Initiative (ROI)
A District 1260 and RIBI Centennial Club project
Creating awareness: Providing a cost effective way to help
eradicate unnecessary world blindness, and save life
and livelihoods for millions by 2020
Targeting donations of Optyse™ ophthalmoscope units to facilitate global distribution to less developed countries, fund cataract operations and other eye-care preventative measures
A low cost, lens-free, pen sized ophthalmoscope. More information
An estimated 37 million people are blind worldwide. This increases by up to 2m each year. 75% of impending blindness is preventable. Without early intervention & treatment, the World Health Organisation (WHO) estimate the number of blind will grow to 75 million by 2020.
Direct ophthalmoscopy is an effective, non invasive technique enabling medical examination of the fundus (retina). It helps early identification of abnormalities indicative of serious medical conditions including hypertension, diabetes, cerebral malaria and early signs of brain tumours, as well as eye conditions such as glaucoma and cataracts that can lead to loss of sight or blindness
Apart from its robustness, safe use, low cost and portability, it can be used with minimal training to examine the retina by health professionals domestically, outside of a hospital environment, as well as by volunteers operating in the field within less developed countries.
The UK retail price of a Optyse™ is £44.65 inc VAT plus P&P. If, as is likely, your Club wants to donate an engraved version, the Grange will provide one free Optyse™ for every £27.50 donated. This is the same product, but carries the Rotary Wheel & is engraved “Donated by Rotarians”. The price includes average P&P foreign currency conversion, & PayPal charges.

Donating could not be simpler. Decide how many units your Club wishes to donate, complete these Word based order / Gift-Aid forms or donate by PayPal. We will liaise directly with Ophthalmos Ltd, to arrange distribution through Sightsavers or other appropriate agencies. See also Match-funding.
The Club has a wide network of contacts and supporters providing eye care to the developing world, operating under THE VISION 2020 - Right to sight umbrella. Our primary distributor is Sightsavers International. Your donation may however be channeled through the Christian Blind Mission (CBM); Unite for Sight; International Centre for EYE Health (ICEH), IMPACT or directed to a nominated Rotary body or charitable organisation.
